Let Children Struggle a Little First
As parents we need to encourage our children to spend time exploring different possibilities before we step in to help. Activities like reading a challenging book or solving a puzzle provide children the chance to encounter effort as part of the learning process. This can help them develop independence and creative problem-solving skills, both of which are life-long skills that will aid them greatly in any situation they might face.
You can help by asking your child the following questions:
- “What else could you try?”
- “Why do you think that didn't work?”
- “Could there be another way?”
- “What would happen if you changed this part?”
The goal is not to make every task difficult or time-consuming; it is to help children become comfortable with the idea that worthwhile things take time.
Final Thoughts:
While giving an immediate answer is the easiest response to a child's question, satisfying their curiosity in seconds, but depriving them of the chance to build perseverance and persistence.
