10 Tips to Help Your Kids Enjoy Reading

Want to spark a love for reading in your child? With the right approach, books can become a source of excitement and adventure!

Reading has the ability to open up your children’s minds to so many different things. It can help make their imagination stronger by visualizing fantasy worlds in their head. It can help them gain knowledge of so many different cultures, subjects, and topics. Being exposed to the pool of information through books will make your children so much more knowledgeable and educated.   Reading can be a source of entertainment as well as a place to run to when the world gets too complicated. But the most challenging part is how to get your children to become readers.   Here are a few tips, brought to you by the Rahet Bally team, to help them not only read but enjoy it in the process:

Start reading at an early age

The key to getting your children used to reading is to make it a habit. You can start as soon as they’re born and start reading to them every day. Make it part of your sleep routine and get them used to see you hold a book and read aloud to them until they fall asleep.   You can also buy books as toys for your little ones such as finger puppet books or interactive books where they can touch, feel, and press on parts of the books to make sounds. The more enjoyable the book, the more it will grow their love towards reading.

Make it part of your quality time

Kids value quality time with their parents. Make reading books that are funny or playful part of your quality time so they look forward to it.

Story-telling

You can take turns reading to each other, but you can also give your kids the chance to make up their own stories. Play games that encourage them to build a story and let their imagination go wild.

Role-playing

Once you’ve read the same book over and over again, you can have your kids act it out for you so they understand how much fun a book can be.

The books you choose play a huge role in making your children enthusiastic about reading. Choose books with lots of pictures, that are colorful, interactive, and playful. Make sure they’re age-appropriate and not too difficult for your kids to read.

Buy books on topics they’re interested in

If your kids are interested in dinosaurs, buy them books that give them more information on that topic. If they’re interested in cars, that’s the topic they should be reading about. Use books as a tool to give them more knowledge and that they’ll want to read about.

Build your own library

Going to libraries or bookstores and being surrounded by hundreds or thousands of books is a delightful experience. So imagine how exciting it will be for your kids to build their own library of books? Have a dedicated reading area in your home and let your children be exposed to the world of books and get familiar with the many different genres that are available.

Make the bookstore their outing and reward

Use books as an incentive whenever they do something right, promise them you’ll buy them a book. That way they will start to link that books are rewards and something to look forward to. Also, when you start giving them pocket money, take them to a bookstore and have them pick out whatever book they want and pay for it with their own pocket money.

Be a role model

In order for your kids to enjoy reading, they must see you reading, too. Kids like to imitate their parents, so be a role model and always have a book with you so they get used to the idea of reading for pleasure.
