Dubai’s Fairgreen school has opened its doors for its inaugural academic year 2018/2019. Join us as we discover more about the ethos behind placing sustainability at the core of education, and how it can shape future generations.
Nestled in the heart of Dubai’s Sustainable City, the innovative Fairgreen campus radiates promise and potential. Set to be the city’s first net-zero waste campus, one look at the grounds and it’s clear that Fairgreen is walking the walk when it comes to it’s promise to ‘tread mindfully on our planet.’ Running entirely on solar energy, and recycling all of its water for agriculture, students are immersed in a model of sustainability that can inspire lifelong habits and goals.
Academically, Fairgreen follows the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum from early years until Grade 12. The experienced faculty employ inquiry-based teaching methods, among others, to encourage curiosity and a deeper learning. Smart enabled class rooms and labs mean that technology is integrated into most aspects of the learning experience.
Sustainable teaching facilities include a dedicated bio-dome, where zero waste agriculture is practiced and taught, as well as a vertical farm, which form part of the food-technology element of the curriculum. Together with the environmental elements of food production, students are taught about nutrition at the same time, which is one of the ways that ‘wellness’ is supported as one of seven key values at the school.
Maintaining a healthy planet also links with a healthy body and mind, and Fairgreen supports a varied sports program, both during the school day and in its afterschool activities program. The school’s dedicated bio-dome also serves as the Health, Wellness and Learning Centre. A large state of the art indoor gymnasium will compliment the outdoor sports activities, which include a large swimming pool, various sports courts, football fields and a playground. The Sustainable City’s cycle and jogging paths are also available for school use, as well as the nearby equestrian centre. Provisions are also made for emotional and mental health, across all elements of the learning experience.
Art and music labs complete the campus, providing for an extensive creative arts and performing arts program, with beautiful dedicated spaces. As well as learning labs and an on-campus library.
By promoting sustainability as its core value and creating an environment that exemplifies what sustainability means practically, Fairgreen is able to really communicate to its young students, what it means to be a global citizen. Fairgreen’s teaching provides local and global context to children, about how we relate to each other and the planet, in a mindful way.
