My Gym UAE – Cartwheeling with excitement, my little tumble-toddler P (who is 22 months old) and I arrived for the Saturday morning ‘Waddlers’ class. The Al Wasl villa, which is conveniently located directly behind Box Park, is decked out with a friendly reception and a plushly carpeted gymnasium, full of brand new equipment.
We were the first to arrive, but as the room filled up with other bouncy little people, the atmosphere soon amped up. Starting with some free-play accompanied by pop-music, which was a huge hit, the class structure hit the right balance of guided prescribed activities, and break away play. With some circle time and warm ups under our belt we were sufficiently limbered up to move on to some more acrobatic activities.
There was balancing on a swinging beam, individual swings, and even a flying trapeze. I was pleasantly surprised to see the level of confidence and skill in the teaching team, as they folded each of the kids into a forward roll down a soft crash-mat. All of the kids seemed so delighted having accomplished this feat, P was a bit sceptical of this to begin with. Speaking to some of the other regular parents, I learned that almost all of the kids experienced a little bit of ‘overwhelm’ in their first class, but by the end of it and certainly by the second class, they were thriving, This sounded familiar, I remember my first Barre class went down the same way, but by the end of it I felt invincible and had signed up for 10 more! What I’m saying is, if this happens to you, stick it out, because it’s totally worth it.
During the free play I noticed P moving with such confidence and joy, trying new things that I hadn’t seen her do before, she was hanging from monkey bars and climbing up a ladder unaided for the first time among other things. After some obstacle course fun, we ended with some more circle time, a song, and a sweet penguin puppet show before saying goodbye to our new friends.
